Dak Prescott hurt his ankle in practice : Cowboys quarterback says it's nothing serious

Dallas quarterback hurt himself while trying on new shoes in practice.

Quarterback Dak Prescott was forced to explain why he didn't finish practice two days before the season opener against Tampa Bay because of a sore right ankle. 

"I was limited today, but like I said, it's my ankle, but I'm just being very, very cautious," Prescott said. "Changing shoes today probably wasn't the best idea."

The ankle problems arose when Prescott went from wearing Jordan 1 shoes to Jordan 11s. His right foot hurt while wearing the new cleats. It's the same joint that was surgically repaired after Prescott broke it in the fifth week of the 2020 season.

So any problem with that ankle raises the level of concern a little bit. When Prescott experienced problems, he reported them to associate athletic trainer Britt Brown. He had just finished the individual portion of practice before heading to the locker room, not to change cleats but to miss the rest of practice.

The entire Prescott episode raises questions. Why wouldn't Prescott put on more comfortable shoes and complete Thursday's practice? 

This was the first practice of the regular season with the highest workload.

And even though everyone on the Cowboys says Prescott is fine, don't you want practice to end? Of course, if your foot or ankle is sore from the new cleats, it might be best to take a break. 

"I actually wear new shoes to every game," Prescott said.

Prescott answered all questions about his health with a definitive tone. He said he didn't sprain his ankle because of the new cleats. He described it as being in mild pain, though it's hard to remember a player not being able to finish practice because of it.

Prescott, who was listed as limited on the team's official practice participation report, joked that the Cowboys have to report his health issue or the organization would be fined.
