At the 95th Academy Awards presentation, Brendan Fraser, who has a key role in Darren Aronofsky's feature film The Whale received the Oscar for Best Actor. The 54-year-old actor took the stage at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles to accept his award. He said, "I want to tell you that only whales can swim in the deep waters (...) thank you for allowing me to return, for allowing me to resurface, for allowing me to return to the surface to be seen again."
In a similar vein, he expressed his gratitude to the Academy for the accolade as well as to the company for producing the movie. For bringing him on this journey with something he authored that was absolutely wonderful, he commended the film's director, Darren Aronofsky. You moved our emotions and gave us a unique opportunity to peer inside souls. "Thanks to you, colleagues, I am extremely delighted to have shared with you in this category," he added in reference to the other performers in the group.
Fraser faced off against Austin Butler for Elvis, Colin Farrell for The Spirits of the Island, Bill Nighy for Living, and Paul Mescal for AfterSun in the same category. Austin Butler for Elvis was also noted as one of the great favourites to win the statuette and was the one who took home the Golden Globe.
Fraser's Oscar Award carries a special significance because it represents his greatest achievement this awards season and serves as a tangible representation of his triumphant return to Hollywood film productions after a season of absence and industry apathy, to which he has previously alluded and which is directly connected to his testimony of abuse that surfaced in 2018.
Fraser's first Oscar adds another trophy to his collection for his portrayal of Charlie in The Whale. The Actors Union also congratulated him with a statuette on February 27, 2023, the Critics' Choice Awards, the Satellite Awards.
In The Whale, an obese English instructor struggling with his own life following the death of his lover is depicted. Charlie, the actor's portrayal of the character, seeks redemption by getting back in touch with his daughter in the movie. When the movie was shown at the Venice Film Festival, Brendan Fraser's performance earned a lot of positive feedback.
Brendan Fraser also starred in Paul Haggins' Crash, The Mummy Trilogy, The Quiet American, To Hell with the Devil, and Journey to the Center of the Earth. The actor also appeared in the DC Comics film Batgirl, whose release was postponed a few months ago, arousing outrage among followers of the superhero comic series.
Along with actors of the calibre of Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, the actor joined the cast of Martin Scorsese's upcoming movie, Killers of the Flower Moon. Scorsese is known for his great classics such as Casino, Good Boys, The Sinister Island, Taxi Driver, and The Wolf of Wall Street. Brendan Fraser appears to be gearing up for a new phase of his career, one that will allow him to work for the most significant Hollywood directors and share scenes with renowned performers.
