The exact amount of money individuals will receive from the Facebook class-action lawsuit settlement will vary depending on multiple factors. Once the Court grants Final Approval of the Settlement and resolves any appeals, the claim website states that settlement payments will be promptly distributed to eligible parties. In 2022, the total number of Facebook users in the U.S. was estimated to be around 240 million, according to Statista.
Although Meta, the parent company of Facebook, agreed in principle to pay the settlement in December 2022, it maintains that it is not admitting any liability or wrongdoing. Meta stated that settling the class-action suit was done in the best interest of their community and shareholders. The company also emphasized that it has implemented a comprehensive privacy program and improved its privacy approach.
During the Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018, then-Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed regret, saying, "I'm really sorry that this happened."
In Friday morning's trading, Meta shares experienced a slight decline of just over 2%. However, the stock has seen significant growth of almost 131.98% in 2023, outperforming the S&P 500's 13.46% gain during the same period.
