Michael Carrick: Former Manchester United midfielder named head coach of Middlesbrough

Chris Wilder, who was fired on October 3 following five losses in the first 11 league games of the season, is replaced by the former Manchester United midfielder. With another backroom hire anticipated soon, Carrick will work with Jonathan Woodgate as the first-team manager.

Steve Gibson, the chairman of Boro, claims that Carrick is the "perfect fit" for the club, which is currently in the Championship just one point above the relegation zone. He remarked, "We had spoken to a number of potential applicants for the post and were all quite impressed, but Michael was the standout choice."

"We have extremely similar goals, and Michael shares the same ideals as the club."

The Championship match at Preston on coming Saturday will be Carrick's first game in command. After retiring from football in 2018, the 41-year-old has taken on his first permanent managing position. Before taking over as interim coach for three games last season, he worked with José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford.

According to reports, Carrick was suggested by England manager Gareth Southgate, who has a good working connection with Boro chairman Steve Gibson due to his time there as a player and manager.

Carrick can bring a fresh perspective

The team has occasionally experienced great success, and the club's chairman, Steve Gibson, loves the area where he was born and raised. Although there has been a period of underperformance under different managers, Michael would bring a fresh perspective. Michael served as an apprentice at Coalface just as he did at Manchester United as an assistant and interim manager.
