Arsenal has made a formal offer to Shakhtar Donetsk for winger Mykhaylo Mudryk, who is their top priority for the upcoming transfer window, though it is understood that their bid is far less than what the Ukrainian club is seeking.

A long-time target for Premier League leaders, Mudryk, a lightning-quick striker who turns 22 next month, has also drawn significant interest from other leagues. This summer, Brentford planned to sign him for a record-breaking amount, but Shakhtar, who are known for being strong negotiators, refused to budge. Although Arsenal did not participate in the tender, the Guardian believes that they have now taken action in order to sign the Ukraine international in January.

Mudryk's value has risen quickly over the fall with a succession of significant Champions League performances, thus Shakhtar will only be considering a sizeable amount. In six group stage appearances, Mudryk scored three goals, and in the current season of Ukraine's premier division, which is on break for the winter, he added seven more. They would like to get up to £85 million for a player considered to be among the best attacking prospects in the world, but Arsenal are not expected to get there.

Gabriel Jesus, a striker for Brazil in the World Cup, sustained a knee injury that has made it more urgent for Arsenal to improve their forward line during the January transfer window.

It is hoped in north London that a contract would eventually be crafted in a way that will satisfy Shakhtar. Mudryk himself has been open about the notion that he would be thinking about moving, and last month he openly disputed Shakhtar's evaluation.
