In a statement, Henry Cavill says he will not reprise his role as Superman


Through his social media accounts, British actor Henry Cavill announced that he will not reprise his role as Superman in the Warner Bros.-produced Superman series.


The co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, who are also the series' directors, confirmed that the actor had learned of the news from them.


The actor wrote on his Instagram account, which has millions of followers, "I just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran, and it's awful news for everyone."

Cavill's tweet appeared as Gunn tweeted that he would be planning on writing a new Superman film that would centre on the DC superhero's formative years, according to The Hollywood Reporter.


We are so happy to be able to share exciting information about our first projects early in the new year because Peter and I have a DC whiteboard ready to go, Gunn wrote.


According to the trade publication, the director also said that he and Safran "had a terrific meeting with Henry and we are big admirers and we talked about a variety of intriguing opportunities to work together in the future."


In the films "Man of Steel," "Batman and Superman: Dawn of Justice," or "Justice League," among others, Cavill, 39, played the role of the superhero.
