Adult Swim has formally severed ties with Justin Roiland, the series' star and co-creator, according to the official Rick and Morty Twitter account.

Due to domestic abuse allegations from a past relationship, Justin Roiland has been sacked from Rick and Morty. Based on a short Back to the Future parody, Roiland and Community veteran Dan Harmon co-created the popular animated comedy series for Adult Swim. Roiland also provides the voices for the mad scientist and his grandson as they travel through the multiverse in touching and strange adventures. The tenth season of Rick and Morty will still air even though one of its primary characters won't be there.

The announcement confirms that the show would continue without Roiland in charge and that the seventh season of the show is already in production. The voice of Roiland will reportedly be replaced for the remainder of the series, and Dan Harmon will now be the only showrunner for Rick and Morty, according to a later story from The Hollywood Reporter.

What led to Roiland's termination from "Rick and Morty"

Nearly two weeks have passed since it was reported that Roiland had been charged with one crime of domestic assault resulting in serious bodily harm and one count of unlawful imprisonment in 2020 at his Orange County, California, home. Roiland initially entered a not guilty plea to the charge, which was brought by his ex-girlfriend with whom he was at the time having a romantic relationship. He was released on $50,000 bail in August of that same year, and his lawyer has since released a statement reiterating his innocence. In an effort to clear the co-creator of Rick and Morty's name. A protective order was reportedly filed against Roiland at the time of the initial charges, Moreover, according to sources, he was presented a plea agreement at a recent pre-trial hearing.

As of the time of the reports earlier this month, Adult Swim remained silent on the subject, making it unclear how Rick and Morty would proceed in light of Roiland's felony accusations. Similarly, Hulu has not said anything about how they will react to the issue because they are unsure of how Solar Opposites seasons 4 and 5 will proceed without Roiland and whether showrunner Mike McMahan will take over as the show's sole creator and major character. The family, Korvo. However, given that Adult Swim severed ties with him, it seems likely that the streaming service will do the same shortly if it doesn't wait for the outcome of Roiland's April court case.
