The transfer of Polish defender Jakub Kiwior from Serie A side Spezia to Arsenal appears to be nearing completion.

In the wake of the £21 million Leandro Trossard signing, Arsenal is edging closer to the unexpected Jakub Kiwior transfer. According to recent sources, Arsenal is nearing a deal to recruit promising Spezia centre-back Jakub Kiwior.

On Thursday, the Gunners signed Leandro Trossard from Brighton for £21 million after missing out on their top target, Mykhailo Mudryk, who signed with Premier League rival Chelsea. But according to Polish transfer expert Tomasz Wlodarczyk, a deal for the aforementioned Kiwior is close, so that doesn't seem to be their sole move in the January transfer window.

The 22-year-old has recently made a name for himself as one of Serie A's most promising centre backs, reportedly drawing interest from teams like Juventus and AC Milan. The battle for his services, though, seems to have been won by Arsenal.

In four games for Poland at the World Cup in Qatar, Kiwior, who has nine caps for his country, has started all four. In order to counterbalance Gabriel, Arsenal has been searching for a left-sided centre defender.

In the Italian top division last season, Kiwior appeared 19 times as a No. 6, demonstrating his versatility as a defensive midfielder, according to Transfermarkt. That will provide Mikel Arteta's team some much-needed cover in the midfield, where they have relied heavily in recent years on Thomas Partey to anchor their midfield.

However, if they want to have both available for their upcoming match, Arsenal will need to move quickly. Neither Kiwior nor Trossard have been officially confirmed as part of the Arsenal squad.
