According to the BBC network, Peter Murrell, the husband of former Scottish First minister Nicola Sturgeon, was arrested on Wednesday in connection with a financial probe into the Scottish National Party (SNP).
An unidentified 58-year-old male was detained in Scotland this morning, according to Police Scotland, and is currently being questioned by detectives while being held at a police station.
The agents also searched several homes as part of the investigation into the finances of the party in power of the Scottish autonomous government, added the Police, who have specified that they cannot comment because it is an ongoing investigation.
The SNP released a statement after learning of the arrest, stating that "it would not be appropriate" to comment on an ongoing police investigation but adding that the party "fully cooperates with this investigation and will continue to do so."
According to the formation, the SNP's executive committee decided over the weekend to evaluate "governance and transparency, which will take place in the coming weeks."
Last February, Sturgeon submitted her resignation as First minister and SNP leader without giving any explanation. This prompted an internal poll, which Humza Yousaf won to remain as the party's head.
Following rumours that he would be subject to a vote of no confidence by SNP Executive members, Murrell announced last month that he was resigning from his position as the Scottish National Party's (SNP) chief executive.
Murrell's resignation, which took effect immediately, was the result of internal party strife over the nationalist party's membership decline and purported financial problems.
After less than a year in office, Douglas Chapman, the then-SNP National Treasurer, submitted his resignation in May 2021 on the grounds that he "had not received the necessary financial information" to perform his job.
