The first black woman to serve in the House of Commons, Diane Abbott, was expelled by the British Labour Party on Sunday due to a letter she wrote about racism.

She claims that, unlike black people, Jews, Irish, and Gipsies "are not subjected to racism all their lives," despite the fact that they "are undoubtedly victims of prejudice," in the piece published by The Observer newspaper.

A Labour Party spokesperson issued a statement condemning Diane Abbott's remarks as "deeply offensive and misguided" and announcing her suspension pending an investigation.

After receiving negative feedback following the publishing of her letter, Diane Abbott issued an apology via Twitter. She said in a statement, "I wish to completely and unreservedly withdraw my comments and disassociate myself from them."

She went on, "I want to apologise for all the distress caused. It is beyond dispute that the Jewish people, along with the Irish, Gipsies, and many others, have endured the horrible impacts of racism in all of its forms.

They are "undoubtedly victims of prejudice," she added in her letter. [...] Many different white people, such as redheads, might become targets of racism.

This issue arises just days before local elections and at a time when Labour is leading the polls over the 13-year-ruling Conservatives.

Anti-Semitism is taken very seriously by this party, which has been rocked in recent years by a number of incidents.

About Daine Abbott

Diane Abbott is a former British Labour Party politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Hackney North and Stoke Newington from 1987 until 2019. She was the first black woman to be elected to the House of Commons.

During her time in Parliament, Abbott served as a shadow cabinet minister for a number of roles, including shadow Home Secretary, shadow Health Secretary, and shadow Minister for Public Health.

Abbott was known for being a vocal advocate for progressive causes and social justice issues, particularly in the areas of race and gender equality, and she has often been a target of criticism and abuse, including racist and sexist attacks.

In 2019, Abbott announced that she would not be standing for re-election in the next general election, citing concerns over her health and the level of abuse and scrutiny she had faced as an MP.

Overall, Abbott has been a significant figure in British politics and a trailblazer for representation of Black and minority ethnic women in the UK Parliament.
