Republicans shocked the party by rejecting Rep. Jim Jordan for the post of House Speaker on the first ballot, setting the stage for potential future unrest. Jordan was unable to obtain the necessary GOP majority to take the gavel because 20 Republicans refused to endorse him. He can afford to lose a small number of votes, though, as the House Republican majority is controlled by a slim margin of 221-212.
The continuous conflict inside the Republican Party has seriously strained relations among House members and interfered with the body's regular operations. Republicans who feel under pressure from Jordan's ardent supporters are unhappy with how the nomination process has played out. Others have concerns about Jordan's role in the events leading up to the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, as well as his unwillingness to recognise Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 election.
Despite these difficulties, Jordan is supported wholeheartedly by former president Donald Trump and grassroots activists who are familiar with him from his regular appearances on cable TV. The front-runner to unseat Biden in the 2024 presidential election is Jordan, who has received Trump's open support.
