During the Oscars in March, he slapped comedian Chris Rock onstage as a result of his pent up rage.
The actor stated these things in his first interview since the incident, which he described as a "terrible night,"
On "The Daily Show with Trevor Noah," he remarked, "I was going through something that night, you know?"
Smith stated that there were "many intricacies and complexities," but he also said: "I just kind of lost control."
Rock cracked a joke about Smith's wife's buzzcut during the Hollywood awards ceremony, and Smith then took the stage.

In a previous interview, the actor said that his wife did not ask that he confront Rock.
Without further explanation, he replied, "I think what I would say is you never know what someone is going through.

The fear that his actions would tarnish his new movie during the forthcoming awards season was hurting Smith, who after the incident won this year's best actor Oscar.
The 54-year-old actor has been barred from the Oscars for 10 years and has resigned from the Academy, which oversees the ceremony.
I entirely understand that if you know someone isn't ready, I would certainly respect that and allow them their space to not be ready, he said in response to the question on what he would say to critics who claimed it was too early to promote his work.
"My team is my main focus. My greatest wish is that my actions don't harm my team because the individuals on my team have produced some of their best work throughout their whole lives."
