Rep. Austin Scott (R-Ga.) has launched a bid for House speaker, putting himself forward as a challenge to House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) for the Republican nomination. The move by Scott is significant because House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) recently withdrew his name from consideration after failing to secure enough votes due to conservative hardliners pledging their support to Jordan. Scott stated on social media that his intention is to lead a House that functions in the best interest of the American people. Aged 53, Scott has served in Congress since 2010.
